About Us
The 1000 Book Project is a reading program established
by the Marlboro Faculty Association (MFA) in Marlboro,
NY. The program is available at Marlboro Free Library
in Marlboro and Sarah Hull Hallock Library in Milton,
NY.
Val Falco and Kathy Bartley, two teachers from the Bethlehem
School District in the Albany, NY area founded the program.
The MFA instituted it in the Marlboro School District
with the support of local businesses, service organizations
and private donors.
After registering for the program families with children
between the ages of 3 to 6 years old who are currently
living in the Marlboro School District are given the
opportunity to read 1000 books at no cost to them. Books
are circulated in packs of ten. The packs were purchased
with funds provided by the community. There are 300
packs of high quality literature totaling 3000 books
available through the library system. When a family
has completed reading 100 packs of books the family
members are invited to a Marlboro School District Board
of Education meeting where the children are awarded
an award certificate and 1000 Book Project tee shirts.
Their picture appears in the local papers.
